Introduction to the Archive
or
Lizards and Comments and Quotes, Oh My!
Having spent far too much time exploring the extras on DVDs, I’ve somehow decided it would be easy to do a commentary for each and every strip. I should also warn you that I’ve been reading a lot of Megatokyo, so brace yourself for a lot of self-indulgent whining (or whinging, if you’re British).
Actually, though I can’t lie about the excessive whining (it’s what I’m good at), it was actually rather interesting looking back at these comics after a decade or more (Holy smeg!). The passage of time has allowed me to take a more detached view, critical of my mistakes, but also proud of the occasions when I actually did a decent job. In other words, for commentary, click on the strip or the date.
The graphics introducing each week are from the envelopes I kept (and still keep) each week’s worth of comics in. They vary in size because I’ve cropped out the blank parts in a vain attempt to keep the file sizes low. If the back was decorated as well, it will appear at the bottom of the page, and if I have an envelope but no comics, it will appear with the following week. Some will have commentaries, so click away, Monkey Boy!
Finally, there are a few things I’m not mentioning in the commentaries but mentioning here, because it would be too repetitive. First off, while current findings show that dinosaurs were more closely related to birds and may have been warm blooded, the comic treats them as cold blooded lizards (albeit intelligent ones who speak English, use currency, etc.). If I recall correctly, this is partially because the current theories were little-known (if they existed at all) when I started the strip, but mostly just because the word Peanuts and Bloom County, both of which tended to go crazy mit der qvotes (Peanuts even used them for terms like “New Feminist” and “Little Leaguer’s Elbow”).
That’s about all I can think of. Enjoy the comics.
