Doing My Part for the War Effort |
To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about the current conflict or war or whatever you want to call the thing in which our country’s armed forces are currently engaged in Iraq. On the one hand, Saddam Hussein is a totalitarian dictator who has committed many despicable acts, often against his own people. On the other hand, so have the leaders of many other nations, including some which are not only allied with the US, but are even given “Most Favored Nation” status. Admittedly, most of those other countries are not (AFAIK) in violation of UN treaties, but (again AFAIK) it hasn’t been proven that Iraq is, either. What bothers me most - even more than the fact that, yet again, the US is acting as the UN’s police dog (whether the UN wants it or not) - is my country’s government’s attitude. One knew for a fact that, whether or not the UN inspectors found any chemical weapons (and you knew they wouldn’t - Saddam either has them too well hidden or - Surprise! - doesn’t have any. It’s not so far-fetched, as Iraq is pretty well-armed even without violating any treaties), the US would invade. The President of the United States of America actually told the United Nations that they’d better find something or the US would invade. Whatever happened to the Burden of Proof? Whatever happened to “Innocent Until Proven Guilty?” The fact is that, with Osama Bin Laden proving difficult to catch, the US needs a new enemy, so why not go after the guy whose previous defeat made Daddy look good (only this time do it closer to the next election so that the Bright Shiny New Victory will still be there long enough to insure a second term)? The guy who tried to take “our” oil. And, coincidentally, he has oil, which we can take for ourselves. C’mon, do you really think Castro would have stayed in power as long as he has if there were obscene amounts of oil in Cuba? Another thing that bothers me is the fact that the news media (in the US) pretty much ignores the anti-war movement both in the US and in other countries. This whole “Yer either fer us, er ag’in us” attitude goes against the very idea of a free country, and makes me wonder if our own elected leaders are much better than the “Evil Dictators” the claim to oppose. At any rate, I urge you to click the image and, even if you don’t buy the T-shirt, to show your support for the troops (though not necessarily for their actions) in whatever way you deem appropriate. Maybe even by donating to the Red Cross. American or Canadian. I’d hoped to put in some less serious stuff as well, like my impressions of the GBA SP, or the second Red Dwarf DVD (to reach the Easter Egg, select the watch and then select “Start” on the Holly Hop Drive), but instead I’ll just let Terry Jones point out the absurdity in America’s attitude. |
