Didn’t Checkerboard Nightmare Already Do This? |
Well, I’m back from my mini-sabbatical, and still running late! Then again, with Keenspace down last I checked (so what else is new?), maybe all five of my readers won’t notice! I’d planned to rant about the apparent antagonism between Damonk and Dennis Kanenwisher, but after less than a day things cooled down. Not only were there some misunderstandings between them, but also among those who heard the news (myself included). Still, since I share Damonk’s opinions on Fanboy Otaku Gamers Club Adventures, I can elaborate on that. We’ve Got Rant! I very much like the strip, but lately it’s become derivative. In the current storyline (which has been running for far too long, IMHO), the characters were whisked through a dimensional vortex and ended up separated on a world very much like the “Planet Gunsmoke” from Trigun. No problem so far - nothing wrong with a little homage, and the story of what the boys did before being reunited was interesting. Unfortunately, once they met the third member of their quartet, the story went downhill. It seems she works for the same insurance company as Millie Thompson and Meryl Strife, and that Vash the Stampede also existed (and I’m guessing the boys’ guns were also made by characters from the series). This wasn’t a similar planet, this was Planet Gunsmoke. It wasn’t an homage, it was a fanfic. They then go on to actually meet Millie and Meryl, and Wolfwood, and then fight at Vash’s side. It’s not just a fanfic, it’s a “Mary Sue” story. A previous F.O.G. Club story that was similarly derivative (though not to such an extent) was the Neo Ranger story. It was kind of interesting, but not only was it a fanfic, it was based on a shaky premise - doing a serious take on a campy adaptation of something. It’s kind of like doing a serious take on the 60’s Adam West Batman series. On to Spidey movie-related web comics!
I think what it boils down to is he went in to the movie deciding to hate it (though being inflexible on the organic web shooters probably made it easier!). See you next time, and hopefully on time, though I make no promises! ![]() |
