There are NO Spoilers Ahead!
Well, Campers, I just saw the Spider-Man movie, and I loved it! Sure, it wasn’t perfect, and I could complain about a few minor things, but nothing even remotely approaching plot-damaging. I only wish I’d seen it with another person who has read far too many comics, so we could discuss the scenes taken either directly or indirectly from the comics.
Did I mention I liked the film?
I don’t think I’d be Spoilering if I dispel two rumors - First off, Stan Lee’s cameo was not cut as previously reported. Just don’t blink. Second, everyone who cares knows Spidey’s webs are organic in the film, right? Supposedly he was also going to use web shooters to control this natural ability, but this is not the case. Of course it’s possible that this was cut for time. I dunno. Guess we’ll find out when the DVD’s released (here’s hopin’ it’ll include the teaser trailer!). I always liked the idea that Spidey was a superhero with powers and gadgets, but changing it isn’t really a big deal, at least as long as Marvel doesn’t insist the comic change it (not entirely unlikely - ever since the success of the X-Men movie Marvel has insisted that Wolverine no longer be depicted with a mask!). Personally, though, I like the theory put forth in the Fox animated series, that the spider somehow passed on the knowledge of how to make webbing.
Speaking of changes to the way Peter Parker’s powers perform (sorry, I couldn’t resist the alliteration!), as was already revealed in the trailer, he sticks to walls via tiny retractable barbs in his fingers (and presumably toes) rather than electrostatically like he does in the comic. This reminds me of another, less enjoyable Marvel Comics adaptation. Remember the sucky Generation X TV movie? Lucky you! Anyhow, it replaced two of the members, Chamber, who has a glowing ball of energy where his chest and lower jaw should be; and Husk, who can rip off her skin revealing a random super-powered one underneath; with Buff, who had super strength; and Refrax, who had X-ray/heat vision. The reason was obvious - they were cheaper to do! According to the TV Guide article, though, it was “...to take full advantage of the visual possibilities.” Right. By replacing something highly visual with something less visual. I’m glad that in the Spidey flick the change really was to make things more visual.
Speaking of comics, today is Free Comic Book Day! Go to your local comics shop and demand your free comic! Really! And don’t forget to come back tomorrow (to this page, not your local comics shop) for Web Comics Awareness Day 2002.
...and come back later today when the strip is up. Sorry it’s late again, but I’ve been doing extra this week, plus I have a headache, plus...
