A Political Cartoon ... Sort Of ... |
Yay! I’m gonna be mentioned in Son of Web Pages That Suck! BTW, It’s because I pointed out Duart’s poor design, not because of this site (whew!). Sadly, I missed the day it appeared in The Daily Sucker (sigh!). At least this is more permanent! Regarding today’s strip: I am indeed rather annoyed at the number of easy-to-answer questions TV Guide’s Televisionary and Flickchick and Anime News Network’s Answerman waste their time and space on. To make sure you don’t fall into that category, Campers, here are links to The Internet Movie Database (which also includes TV shows - “I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find who starred in Simon & Simon!” indeed!), TV Guide’s MovieGuide, AnimeOnDvd.com (like you really need it spelled out ...) and The Right Stuf (this will skip the stupid Flash intro). I’m afraid Total Television isn’t available in easy-to-digest website form (AFAIK), but if you (understandably) don’t want to buy it, see if you can find it in a library before clogging the Televisionary’s email inbox. Despite their preference for the lazy answers, I have no grudge against TV Guide’s two columnists, but ANN’s Answerman is another story. First off, he’s sometimes wrong (more often than the aforementioned duo), and he doesn’t react well when I point that out. Second, he often answers questions multiple times. Admittedly these are mostly because readers will submit several questions and he apparently isn’t allowed to edit them (ANN Co-Editor-In-Chief George “Cookie” Phillip told me that people complained when their letters were edited), but I think there are ways around this. How about ignoring the complaints? If you submit multiple questions and they include ones that were covered, don’t complain if they’re edited! Or maybe a more polite tack would be if the “Contact the Answerman” link, rather than immediately doing the “mailto” thing, would open a page asking people to first check the aforementioned places and previous columns and warning them that if they ask a previously answered question the Answerman reserves the right to edit the letter (as long as he doesn't do this [second letter]). Of course the thing that really gets me is the way he far too often injects his own opinions into the answers, but I think I’ll take the high road and say no more about that. That and the rant is twenty-two hours late, and Keenspace is only partially to blame ^_^ Some good news from Nausicaä.net: First off, contrary to previous rumors, the Whispers of the Heart DVD (release date 5/24) will have English subs, so if you’ve been saving up to place a full page ad in Variety complaining to Disney, you can send the money to me instead. Or get the DVD from CD Japan. Second, there will be a special Ghibli DVD Player Bundled Edition of Sen to Chihiro which, at ¥19800 (around US$200), sounds like a pretty good deal. Maybe next time I can do some of the rants I forgot to do on Saturday ... |
