DDR for GBC |
Yes, campers, it really does exist, in at least four versions! Obviously you’re supposed to use your fingers to play, but where’s the fun in that? Interestingly (okay, maybe not - you may wanna skip this paragraph and the next two), this was meant to be the first strip, and I even did a doodle of it (which I may post if I can ever find it), but ... well ... I’m a procrastinator, and part of being a good procrastinator is finding excuses not to do things. The two big ones were: 1. I couldn’t get the character designs right and 2. It’s a pain to carefully tape the paper the drawing board, get out the T-square triangle and ruler, and draw the panel borders Eventually I was motivated when my friend and fellow Otakon Staffer, Alyce Wilson, announced that she was starting a webzine called Wild Violet and needed submissions. I decided to get off my figurative duff and submit a comic strip! I decided that If I pre-printed the panels I’d have no excuse, so I measured the panels at MegaTokyo (obviously I went back in their archives to the early days, when they still did the 4-panel format), increased it to half-up (although I ended up with a size that’s somewhat different, by a combination of accident and design, though that may change in the future, now that I see the results on the web ...) and printed up a bunch of blank panels on smooth surface Bristol board. There was still the matter of character design, but I finally convinced myself that there look would just have to evolve over time, or I’d never get started. I figured that a DDR gag might not be appropriate for a literary zine, so I did one about The Lord of the Rings (do I even need a link to the strip, considering it was two days ago? Sure!). After much deliberation, Alyce decided it wasn’t right for Wild Violet, but it didn’t matter - I’d been motivated! I soon found out that my friend and fellow PSSFS member, Victor Colonna (a.k.a. “Squirle” of M.O.R.O.N.S) drew and co-wrote a web comic (I dunno what it’s called ^_-), and it suddenly occurred to me that Keenspace would take anybody (no offense, Victor!). A little research showed that the service was free (as long as I put their banner ads on my site) and that I’d have full ownership, etc., etc.. I could go on about how bloody long it took to get my password, but that’s a rant for when I don’t have a better subject (and maybe when my strip’s late because their server’s down or something ...). In other news, I’ve decided that rather than deleting the three test pages I did to test my code, I would put appropriate comics there. The first (or is it the second?) is up right now. In case you care, I grew up speaking both English and German, and when I was small I would often mix the languages. “Haben” is German for “to have” and “Cookze” is a combination of “Cookie” and “Plätze” (German for “Cookie,” natch). According to my Mom, I used to use the phrase quite often, and it may even have been my first words! Wow! I’m already done with this rant on Tuesday night! Admittedly, this is a necessity, as I probably won’t be home tomorrow until after Midnight (upload time for me), but it’s still a nice feeling! See you Saturday, in color! |
