The Lesser of Two Evils |
Welcome to my new comic strip! Well, actually I drew this back in December (which is why the copyright reads "2001") but Keenspace took forever with my password (so much so that thethree guest strips I did for M.O.R.O.N.S. went up before the main strip), and add to that my natural talent for procrastination ... Well anyway, it’s up now - Hoody-Hoo! I suppose I should tell you a little about myself (don’t worry, I’m saving the really boring stuff for the "about" page). I’m basically a consummate fanboy. As for what I’m a fan of ... a list would only bore you, plus I’m sure I’d leave out a lot of things. Read the strips and the rants and you’ll get a much better idea than any list could give you (I hope). For now, suffice to say that I am NOT a fan of sports, Reality TV (I don’t consider “Takeshi’s Castle” to be either ^_^), dubbing, or the average moviegoer. On to the characters! I’m slightly less insane and have slightly more common sense than my comic strip counterpart. Slightly. also pretty much look like that, except that while my eyebrows are connected, it’s not the “Bert from Sesame Street” look (actually, as I write this my eyebrows are separate - I shaved the divider so I could cosplay as Black Jack at Katsucon 8), and my suspenders (yes, campers, I actually do wear suspenders) attach to my pants rather than ... uh ... I dunno what holds his in place. Magnetomic adhesion, maybe? The other fat guy (with the beard and glasses) is based on my friend Jeff Kleist, who (among other things) writes the Otaku no DVD column currently running in DVD Angle. The character is similar (although “Radioactive” Jeff is probably a bit less crazy than “Real” Jeff), and I try to make sure his cartoon counterpart shares his interests and dislikes (as in today’s strip, based loosely on an actual conversation we had). Jeff looks pretty much like his character, although I notice the longer I draw them the less they look like their real life bases and the more their “true” forms emerge (if that makes any sense ...) Now about the title: I’d always wanted the word “Fanboys” in the title. The addition of “Radioactive” just “rolled off the typewriter”, like the word “Dalek” for Terry Nation (the explanation given in the Oxford English Dictionary is a fiction that Nation invented when the press refused to believe the less interesting truth). Thinking about it, I may have wanted a modifier to indicate that these were not just your average garden-variety fanboys, but rather so into their hobbies that they're positively glowing (or something to that effect), but I can’t in all honesty claim to be that clever. Hoo boy, that’s a longer rant than I intended. Just be glad I didn’t try to list my interests. I’d hoped to write something on the Bakshi and Rankin/Bass versions of LoTR, but for now this will have to suffice. See you Thursday! |
